AVIF is the newest of the common image formats, and it makes much smaller files than JPG or PNG at the same look, which is why websites use it to load faster. This AVIF converter turns your PNG, JPG, WebP and GIF images into AVIF right in your browser. Press Select images (or drop them onto the page), and press Download AVIF. The file keeps its name, so photo.png comes out as photo.avif.
Quality sets how much detail is kept: 60 is the default and looks close to the original for photos, higher numbers keep fine texture and make bigger files, lower numbers make the smallest files. Transparent PNGs stay transparent in the AVIF. A GIF gives its first frame, as a still picture.
Downloaded an .avif file that your editor, upload form or older phone will not open? Drop it here: the page picks JPG for you, or PNG when the image is transparent, and the arrow next to the download button switches between AVIF, JPG, PNG and WebP. JPG has no transparency, so a transparent AVIF saved as JPG gets a white background, and the preview shows that before you save.
Every current browser can open AVIF images on its own. On an older one that cannot, the page loads an AVIF decoder once and the conversion works just the same.
Pick or drop as many images as you like, even a mix of formats. They appear as a list: tap a name to preview it, tap the x to leave it out. The button then reads Download 5 AVIF (or however many there are) and saves every converted image in one ZIP file, each under its own name. A file in the pick that is not an image is skipped with a message.
For one image in any format, including BMP, ICO and TIFF, the image converter has them all on one page. To make the files smaller in pixels too, use the batch resizer.
AVIF takes more work to write than JPG. Some versions of Chrome write it themselves; everywhere else the page loads an AVIF encoder the first time you save one (you see "Getting ready - first time only") and then works on your images right on your device. A 12 megapixel photo takes a few seconds.
When that encoder is in use, Options holds Best quality (slower). It spends several times as long on each picture and keeps a little more fine detail at the same file size. Leave it off for a batch of photos, turn it on for the one picture that has to look its best.
Phone photos are often stored sideways with a note that says "rotate me". The converter applies that note before it writes the AVIF, so the picture comes out the right way up in every viewer.
For photos AVIF usually makes the smallest file at the same quality, often around half the size of a JPG. WebP sits between the two. JPG is still the one every program opens, so keep a JPG when you need to send a picture to someone whose software you do not know.
Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari show AVIF images, and recent Windows and macOS versions preview them. Older photo editors and some upload forms still refuse them, and that is when converting AVIF to JPG or PNG helps.
Yes. A transparent PNG or WebP converted to AVIF keeps its transparent areas, and an AVIF converted to PNG or WebP keeps them too. Only JPG fills them with white.
