Blend Two Images Together, Online and Free

This image blender mixes two pictures into one. Drop in the first image, add the second, and the Blend slider does the rest: at 0% you see only image 1, at 100% only image 2, and everywhere in between the two are blended together in one picture. Fifty per cent is a straight cross-fade, the thing most people mean by blending two photos. It is a free online blend tool that runs entirely in your browser, so neither picture is uploaded anywhere.

Blending is not the same as a merge. To merge two images is to put them side by side, next to each other; to blend them is to put them in the same place at the same time, so the colours of one show through the other. That is what makes a double exposure, a ghosted logo over a photo, a texture laid into a portrait, or two landscapes fading into each other.

How to Blend 2 Pictures Together

Open the first picture: drop it on the page, browse for it, or paste it from the clipboard. It sets the size of the result.
Click the second, dashed slot in the panel and choose the picture you want to blend in. You can also just drop the second file anywhere on the page.
Drag the Blend slider to mix them. The preview updates live as you drag.
Pick a blend mode if you want more than a plain fade, and a gradient if you want one picture to fade into the other across the frame.
Download the blended image as PNG, JPG or WebP, copy it to the clipboard, or rename the file first.

The swap button between the two rows exchanges the pictures, which also hands the output size to the other one. Press S to swap, R to reset every setting, D to download, I for the details card and F for fullscreen. To blend a different pair, remove the second image with the small cross on its row and add another.

Blend Modes: Multiply, Screen, Overlay and the Rest

The blend mode decides how the colours of the two images are combined before the Blend slider mixes them in. Every mode here is the browser's own compositing, the same maths a graphics editor uses:

Normal simply fades one picture over the other. This is the plain cross-fade.
Multiply multiplies the colour values, so the result is always darker. The multiply effect makes a white background disappear, which is why it is the usual pick for laying a signature, a stamp or a sketch onto a photo.
Screen is the opposite: it lightens, and black becomes invisible. Good for flares, sparks, smoke and fireworks.
Overlay and soft light and hard light darken the dark parts and lighten the light parts at once, so one picture takes on the shading of the other. This is the classic way to blend a texture into an image.
Darken and lighten keep whichever pixel is darker or lighter, channel by channel.
Color dodge and color burn push the highlights and the shadows hard, for a strong, contrasty look.
Difference and exclusion subtract one image from the other, which gives the psychedelic colour shifts you have seen on album covers, and also makes any part where the two pictures are identical go pure black.

Gradient Blend: Fade One Photo Into Another

Set Gradient blend to left to right, top to bottom or from the center, and the second picture no longer covers the whole frame evenly. Instead it is at full strength at one edge and fades away towards the other, so image 1 shows through progressively. That is the gradient blend people ask for when they want two photos to melt into one another rather than to sit on top of each other, and it works with every blend mode and at any blend amount.

The centre option fades the second picture out in a circle, which is a quick way to drop a face, a product or a logo into the middle of a background without a hard edge around it.

Two Pictures of Different Sizes

The two images almost never have the same shape, so the second one has to be sized to the first. Three choices sit under Second image size:

Fill scales it up until it covers the whole frame and cuts whatever hangs over the edge. This is the default, because two blended photos should meet edge to edge.
Fit scales it down until all of it is inside the frame, leaving the frame's own picture visible around it.
Stretch squeezes it to the frame exactly, which distorts it but wastes nothing.

The info card on the stage (the i button in the corner) reports both source sizes, the size of the result, and exactly how much of the frame the second picture covers and how much of it was cut off. If you would rather the other picture set the size, press swap.

Download the Blended Image

The download is rendered from the two original files at full resolution, not from the preview on screen, and comes out as PNG, JPG or WebP. Transparency is kept in a PNG or a WebP; a JPG has no transparency, so any see-through area is filled white rather than black. There is no watermark, no account and no upload: the blending happens in your browser with the canvas API, and the page keeps working offline once it has loaded.

What does the multiply blend mode do?

Multiply multiplies the colour values of the two pictures, so the result is never lighter than either one and pure white disappears completely. That is why it is the usual mode for putting a scanned signature, a stamp, a sketch or a text layer on a photo: the white paper around the marks drops out and only the dark strokes stay.

Can I fade one photo into another instead of blending the whole frame?

Yes. Set Gradient blend to left to right, top to bottom or from the center. The second picture is then at full strength at one side and fades out towards the other, so the two photos melt into each other across the frame instead of being mixed evenly everywhere.
