Levels is the tone control every editor has: a histogram of the picture with a black point, a white point and a gamma slider under it. Drag the black point to where the shadows begin and everything darker turns black; drag the white point to where the highlights end and everything lighter turns white; the picture's tones stretch to fill the whole range and a flat, hazy photo gains contrast without the crude look of a contrast slider. Gamma bends the midtones brighter or darker without moving the ends, and the output levels compress the result for a soft, faded look. This tool is that dialog in the browser: the same maths, a live histogram, an Auto button, and a Threshold preset for pure black and white. The download is the original picture at full resolution with the levels applied.
The input black and white points define the range of the original that becomes 0 and 255. A pixel at the black point becomes black, one at the white point white, and everything between is stretched linearly; pixels outside the points clip. Gamma is a curve applied to that stretched value: the middle grey moves while the ends stay put, which is why it changes how bright the picture feels without losing the deepest shadow or brightest highlight. Output black and white then map the finished 0..255 onto a narrower range. All three steps are applied to the red, green and blue channels alike, so the colour balance stays as it was and only the tones change. The details card on the picture shows the current points and gamma.
Auto levels reads the histogram and sets the black and white points so that 0.1 percent of the pixels fall outside on each side - the standard auto-contrast fix that clears the haze from a scan or a flat phone photo in one click. Threshold puts the black and white points one step apart: every pixel darker than the cut goes black, every lighter one goes white. Move the black point afterwards to shift the cut, and the picture becomes a clean two-tone image for a stencil, a scan of handwriting or line art.
The picture is processed in your browser on its original pixels; nothing is uploaded and there is no signup or watermark. For a single-slider fix, the gamma and exposure tools change one thing at a time, contrast stretches around the middle, and the histogram viewer shows the tone distribution per channel without changing the picture.
A tone correction that maps a chosen black point and white point in the original to pure black and white, stretching the tones between them, with a gamma control for the midtones. It fixes flat, hazy or dim pictures while keeping the colour balance.
Contrast pushes both ends apart around the middle by the same amount. Levels lets you move each end separately to where the picture's tones actually are, so a photo that is only missing deep blacks gets them without blowing out the highlights.
