If you are digitizing old 35mm film, plain inversion is usually not enough: color negative film has an orange base mask, and a raw invert leaves the photo looking washed in blue. The Film to positive mode handles this properly: it inverts the scan and then rebalances each color channel automatically, stretching the levels so the orange cast disappears and the restored photo gets natural colors and full contrast.
