Online application forms for exams, bank jobs and government posts rarely take a signature as it comes off the phone. They ask for a fixed size, such as 140 x 60 pixels, and a file size window, such as 10 to 20 KB, and reject anything outside it. A signature photographed on paper comes out grey, with a shadow at one side and a slightly coloured tint. Clean up paper measures the paper across the photo and turns it evenly white, then darkens the ink, so a blue pen stays blue and a black pen turns properly black. Trim empty space cuts away the empty paper around the signature, so it fills the frame instead of floating small in the middle. The signature is never stretched: when its shape differs from the frame, the leftover space is white paper.
