A silhouette is the subject reduced to one flat shape in one colour, and this silhouette maker gets that shape from wherever the picture keeps it, whether you create it from a JPG photo or a PNG cut-out. A cut-out PNG with a transparent background already carries its outline in the transparency, so Shape from Transparency fills exactly that outline - a product shot, a logo or a background-removed portrait becomes a silhouette with no guessing. A flat photo has no outline, so Dark areas takes everything darker than the Cut-off as the shape - a person against the sky, a tree at sunset, a hand on a bright wall - and Light areas takes the opposite for a bright subject on a dark ground. Smooth evens out grain before the cut so the edge follows the subject rather than the noise, and Clean up removes stray specks smaller than the number you set. The download is a PNG at the image's full size, made in the browser.
Silhouette colour is black by default, with white and a few strong colours a click away and a custom picker for anything else. Background is transparent by default so the shape drops straight onto a poster, a slide or another photo; choose white, black, a colour or your own and the file is saved flat instead. The cut is soft on purpose: the edge ramps over a narrow band of tones instead of snapping pixel by pixel, so the silhouette has the anti-aliased outline of a drawn shape rather than a staircase. The stage info card shows where the shape came from, how much of the image it covers and how many specks were removed.
A silhouette on a transparent background saves as PNG, or WebP for a smaller file; JPG has no transparency and is offered once a background colour is set. The pencil next to the file name renames the download, the copy button puts the shape on the clipboard for a document or a design app, and on a phone the share button sends it to another app.
The photo is decoded in your browser, the shape is cut on your own processor and the PNG is assembled on the device. Nothing is uploaded, no account is needed and no server keeps a copy, so a portrait can become a silhouette without leaving your phone or computer.
Pick the photo and choose Dark areas if the subject is darker than its background, which is the usual case for a person against the sky, or Light areas if it is brighter. Drag Cut-off until the shape covers the subject and nothing else, raise Smooth if the edge looks ragged, and raise Clean up if small dots remain. Then download the PNG.
Yes, and it is the best case. When the image has transparency, Shape from Transparency is selected automatically and the silhouette is exactly the visible part of the picture, filled with the colour you choose. Cut-off then decides how much of a soft or semi-transparent edge counts as inside the shape.
Dark areas turns every region darker than the Cut-off into the silhouette, so shadows, dark clothing and a dark ground join the subject. Lower the Cut-off until only the subject is left, or if the subject cannot be separated by brightness alone, remove the background first with a background remover and use Transparency here.
