YouTube shows a video's thumbnail everywhere except where you can actually look at it. This YouTube thumbnail viewer puts it on screen at full size: paste the video link, and the thumbnail appears in HD with every smaller size YouTube keeps listed under it. It is the quickest way to find the thumbnail image of any video, and handy for checking how a competitor framed their cover, saving your own thumbnail after the original file is long gone, or grabbing the cover of a video for a playlist, a blog post or a school project.
YouTube stores up to five versions of each thumbnail: HD (usually 1280 x 720), SD (640 x 480), HQ (480 x 360), MQ (320 x 180) and a small 120 x 90 one. Older and very short videos often have no HD or SD version, and YouTube quietly serves a grey placeholder picture in its place. The viewer checks each size and only shows the ones that really exist, with the pixel dimensions read from the image itself. The SD and HQ versions are 4:3 with black bars top and bottom, because YouTube letterboxes the 16:9 picture inside them; HD and MQ are the clean widescreen crop.
Copy the link from the address bar, the Share button or the app and paste it as it is. Normal watch links, youtu.be short links, Shorts, live streams, embed codes, links from the mobile site and YouTube Music, a link with a timestamp or a playlist on the end, and even a whole share message with the link inside all work. So does the 11-character video ID on its own. A paste looks the video up straight away; there is nothing else to press.
Download saves YouTube's own JPG file byte for byte, named after the video ID and its size, so nothing is re-compressed on the way. The arrow button opens the image in a new tab, and tapping the image address under the buttons copies it, ready to paste into a forum post, a spreadsheet or an embed. YouTube only makes the HD and SD thumbnails when the uploaded video is large enough, so old uploads and low-resolution videos stop at HQ, 480 x 360. When a size is missing YouTube sends a grey placeholder instead, and the viewer hides that size rather than showing you the placeholder.
