This free tool adds a border to an image, or to a batch of images one after another, in a few taps: open the photo, pick a colour, drag the width slider, download. The default is a black border around the picture, the most asked-for frame for prints, portfolio pages and social posts; one tap turns it white for a gallery look, cream for a warm mat, or any custom colour from the picker. The width is set as a share of the photo's short side, so the same setting gives a frame that looks the same on a phone snapshot and a 24 megapixel camera file, and the details card on the picture tells you the exact pixel width and the final size.
Border sits has two options. Around the photo grows the canvas: nothing of your picture is covered, and the result is larger than the original by twice the border width. Over the edge keeps the size exactly as it was and paints the border on top of the outermost pixels, which is what you want when the image has to stay 1080 × 1080 or fit a fixed slot. Both work with the corner control: Rounded corners rounds the outside of the frame and the picture inside it follows, so the border keeps an even width all the way round.
Portrait and landscape photos get cropped or shrunk by Instagram; a square frame with black or white bars is the usual way to post the whole picture. Switch on Square frame and the tool pads the shorter side so the result is a perfect square, with the border colour filling the bars, and the photo centred. The same setting makes a square with a passport-style white border for ID photo layouts, or a square black-bordered tile for a grid.
The download is rendered from the original file at full resolution, never from the preview, so a 6000 × 4000 photo comes back as 6000 × 4000 plus the border. Save as PNG for a lossless copy, JPG for the smallest file, or WebP for both; rounded corners need transparency, so the tool switches to PNG for them and paints the corners white if you insist on JPG. The frame can also be copied to the clipboard or shared straight from a phone. The photo never leaves your device: the border is drawn inside your browser, and nothing is uploaded, stored or watermarked. That makes it fine for client work, family photos and anything else you would rather not put on somebody's server.
Open the photo. The border is black by default, so drag the width slider to the thickness you want and press Download. The border goes around the picture unless you choose Over the edge.
Tap the white swatch, set the width, and switch on Square frame. The result is a square with the photo centred and white bars filling the rest, which Instagram shows uncropped.
Around the photo makes the result bigger by twice the border width on each axis; Over the edge keeps the exact original size and covers the outer pixels instead. The details card shows both the border width in pixels and the final size.
Yes. The last swatch opens a colour picker with a hex field and an eyedropper that samples the photo itself, so a border can match a colour in the picture.
Yes. The Rounded corners slider rounds the outside of the frame and the picture follows with a smaller radius, keeping the border an even width. The outside of the corners is transparent in PNG and WebP.
