Feathering means letting the border of a picture dissolve instead of ending on a hard line. Load a photo here, drag the Feather slider, and the edges melt away in a smooth gradient: a little for a gentle softening, a lot for a photo that fades to nothing well before it reaches the frame. The fade can run out to full transparency, which is what you want when the image has to sit on a coloured page or another photo, or to a colour of your choosing for a printed vignette look.
The fade is measured as a share of the image's short side rather than in pixels, so the same setting looks the same on a phone snapshot and on a forty megapixel scan, and what you see in the preview is exactly what the download contains.

Rectangle keeps the shape of the photo and fades each of the four sides inward, so the picture stays as wide as it started and simply loses its hard border. This is the version people usually mean by feathered edges or a faded border: it drops an image onto a page or a slide without a visible seam.
Oval fades from an inscribed ellipse outward, which is the vignette that old portrait prints and album pages have. The corners go first, then the sides close in as the slider rises. If you want a hard oval outline rather than a soft one, that is a crop rather than a feather, and the oval crop tool does it with draggable handles.
Fading to transparency writes the gradient into the image's alpha channel, so the result drops cleanly onto any background. That only survives in formats that can store transparency, which is why this tool saves PNG and WebP and not JPG.
Fading to a colour composites the picture over that colour instead, and the result is fully opaque. Use white for a print or a light page, black for a dramatic vignette, or match the exact background colour of the site or document the image is going into. If you already have a transparent PNG and only want a solid background behind it, fill transparency is the more direct tool, and trim transparent crops away empty edges instead of creating them.
