WhatsApp keeps a profile picture as a square and then shows it as a circle, so a normal phone photo gets trimmed twice: once when the tall shape is squared off, and again when the corners of that square disappear behind the circle. Heads end up cut at the chin, group shots lose whoever stood at the edge.
