This free black and white converter turns a photo or picture black and white right in your browser. Two modes cover the two things people mean by it: Classic produces a rich grayscale photo with the full range of tones from deep black to bright white, and No grey produces pure black and white with nothing in between, which is what you want for line art, logos, stencils, laser engraving and document scans. The preview updates instantly and the download keeps your image's full resolution.
Classic mode converts each pixel with the standard luminance weighting used in photography and broadcast, so greens read brighter than blues the way your eye expects. That keeps skin tones natural and skies deep instead of the flat grey that naive filters produce. It suits portraits, street photography and any picture that should look like a real black and white photograph.
No grey mode makes every pixel either pure black or pure white. The threshold slider decides where the cut happens: drag it left and more of the image turns white, drag it right and more turns black, live as you move it. This is the mode for converting drawings and sketches to clean line art, preparing logos and stamps, making stencils and silhouettes, and producing the binary images that cutting machines, engravers and some printers need.
The invert switch flips the output in either mode. In Classic it gives you a negative-style white-on-black photo; in No grey it turns black line art into white lines on a black background, handy for dark backgrounds, chalkboard-style graphics and screen printing. If you need full color inversion instead, use the negative image converter.
The sliders work on a screen-sized preview, but the download is recomputed from your original pixels at full size, so a 12 megapixel photo exports as a 12 megapixel black and white image that matches the preview exactly. Transparency in PNG images is preserved. Everything runs on your device: no upload, no signup, no watermark. If you want to adjust colors instead of removing them, try the hue shifter.

Choose the No grey mode. Every pixel becomes either pure black or pure white, and the threshold slider controls where the split happens, live in the preview. This is the right mode for line art, logos, stencils and binary images.
It sets the brightness level that separates black from white in No grey mode. Pixels brighter than the threshold become white and darker ones become black, so sliding it decides how much detail survives as black.
No. The conversion is recomputed on your original pixels at full resolution when you download, and PNG output is lossless. Transparency is preserved, and JPG and WebP save at high quality.
No. The whole conversion runs in your browser: the image is opened locally, processed on your device and saved straight back to it. Nothing is transmitted to any server.
