JPG is the format for the moments a layered design has to travel: mail attachments, chat uploads, application forms, marketplaces and CMS fields that reject anything unusual all take a JPG without complaint, and the files are a fraction of the PSD's size.
JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas of the document are flattened onto a clean white background - the standard behavior designers expect, and what makes the file safe for every uploader. When the transparency itself matters, switch the format menu to PNG or WebP and the background stays clear; PSD to PNG is the same converter with that as the default. Single pixel layers can also be pulled out individually as transparent PNGs from the layer list.
The decoder reads what Photoshop actually writes: RGB, CMYK, Grayscale, Indexed, Bitmap, Duotone, Lab and Multichannel color modes at 8, 16 and 32 bits per channel, RAW, RLE and ZIP compressed data, and both PSD and large-format PSB containers. CMYK and Lab documents are converted to RGB for the image output, which is what a JPG needs anyway. Files saved without a flattened preview still convert - the visible layers are stacked to rebuild the composite, and the page says so when that approximation is in play.
