Grayscale Conversion Is Not One Formula

Every color to grayscale conversion has to answer the same question: how much should red, green and blue each contribute to the gray? Different answers give visibly different monochrome photos, which is why this converter puts the method up front instead of applying one fixed grayscale filter and hoping it suits your picture.

• Luminance (Rec. 709) is the default and the right choice for most photos. It follows the modern HD standard, weighting green most heavily and blue least, because that is how human eyes actually judge brightness. Skin stays natural and skies stay deep.
• Classic (Rec. 601) uses the older broadcast weighting. It renders reds a little brighter and gives the slightly warmer, softer look of older black and white television and video.
• Average simply adds the three channels and divides by three. It is the naive textbook formula, useful when you need to match another tool that does the same, though it tends to look flat.
• Lightness takes the midpoint of the brightest and darkest channel. It produces a lower contrast, more washed out result that suits some graphic work.
• Red, Green and Blue channel discard the other two channels entirely. This is the photographer's trick: the red channel smooths skin and blows out foliage, the green channel holds the most detail and is the sharpest of the three, and the blue channel darkens skies dramatically and exaggerates noise.

If you are not sure, leave it on Luminance. If you are converting a portrait, try the red channel. If you are converting a landscape, compare green and blue.

The Strength Slider: Partial Desaturation

Strength controls how far the conversion goes. At 100% the image is fully grayscale. Pull it down and the original colors bleed back in, so 40% gives a muted, faded look and 15% barely drains the color at all. Partial desaturation is a common editorial and web-design treatment, and doing it here means you never have to open a full editor just to knock the saturation back.
