Half inch squares are the big-hand grid: what younger children write numbers into, what a teacher draws a bar chart on for the whole class to see, what a quilter plans a block on at half an inch to the inch. At 1/2 inch to the foot it is a comfortable scale for a room or a garden bed, and for a board game or a dungeon map a half inch cell fits a token. This page prints it: half inch squares on Letter, Legal, Tabloid, A4, A3 or A5, portrait or landscape, in faint grey through black, blue or green. A Letter sheet holds 15 by 20 whole squares inside the 10 mm printer margin, or 17 by 22 with the margin off. A heavier line every 2 squares marks the inches, every 4 the two-inch blocks.
The PDF is drawn as vectors in millimetres with the sheet size in its page box, so it prints crisp on any printer and a square is 12.7 mm, exactly half an inch, when the print dialog is on actual size (100%) rather than "fit to page". The PNG and JPG are rendered at 300 DPI (200 on Tabloid and A3) with that resolution written into the file, so apps that honour it place them at true size too. The Print button opens the print dialog with the paper already set. Pages puts up to 20 identical sheets into one PDF and one print run; the PNG and JPG are always a single sheet.
The Grid size control switches the same sheet to 1/4 inch for ordinary graphing, 1 inch for big blocks, 1/10 inch for engineering plots, and the metric 2 mm, 5 mm and 1 cm grids; this page opens on half an inch because that is what it is for. The details card on the sheet reports the square count for the paper you picked.
