Ruled paper is the one sheet everybody runs out of: for handwriting practice, a letter, exam answers, a shopping list on the fridge, a child's story. This lined paper generator makes it in the browser. Choose the ruling - wide (8.7 mm, the primary-school and US "wide ruled" spacing), college (7.1 mm, the standard notebook line) or narrow (6.35 mm, a quarter inch, for small handwriting) - and whether the classic red margin line and header rule are drawn. Pick an ink (blue is the classic; grey, black and green are there too), the paper (A4, A3, A5, Letter, Legal or Tabloid, portrait or landscape) and print. Top of the page set to "Space for a picture" leaves the upper half blank, which is the story paper young writers use to draw and then write about it.
The lines are laid out in millimetres and the PDF is written as vectors with the sheet size in its page box, so it prints crisp on any printer and the spacing is exact when the print dialog is set to actual size (100%, not "fit to page"). The PNG and JPG are rendered at 300 DPI (200 on A3 and Tabloid) with that resolution written into the file, so word processors and note apps place them at true size too. The Print button opens the print dialog with the paper already set. The 10 mm margin keeps the lines inside the area a printer can reach; set it to none and the ruling runs to the edge of the sheet. Pages puts up to 20 identical sheets into one PDF and one print run; the PNG and JPG are always a single sheet.
The sheet is a template to print or to type over - digital lined paper for typing on, if that is the job. Download the PNG and set it as a page background in a word processor, or the PDF as the background of a notes app on a tablet, and the lines stay put under whatever you write. The generator itself does not have a text box - it makes the paper, not the letter.

Wide ruled is 11/32 inch (8.7 mm) between lines, college ruled 9/32 inch (7.1 mm) and narrow ruled 1/4 inch (6.35 mm). European exercise books are usually 8 mm; wide ruled is the closest here.
Yes, and that is a different question from this page: bought lined paper goes through a printer like any other sheet, as long as it is not a torn-out page with a ragged edge. This generator is for the opposite case - you have plain paper and want it ruled.
