Four squares to the inch is the standard classroom graph paper in the United States - the sheet for plotting functions in algebra, for geometry homework, for the science lab's data tables. It is also the crafter's grid: cross-stitch and knitting charts are drawn on it, quilt blocks are planned on it, and at a scale of 1/4 inch to the foot it is the sketch pad for a room layout. This page prints it: quarter inch squares on Letter, Legal, Tabloid, A4, A3 or A5, portrait or landscape, in faint grey through black, blue or green. On a Letter sheet that is 30 by 40 whole squares inside the 10 mm margin printers need, or 34 by 44 with the margin off. A heavier line every 4 squares marks the inches, every 8 the two-inch blocks.
A quarter inch grid that comes off the printer at 0.24 inch is the usual disappointment, and it happens because the print dialog scaled the page. The PDF here is drawn as vectors with the sheet size in its page box: choose actual size (100%, not "fit to page") and a square is 6.35 mm, a quarter inch, on paper. PNG and JPG exports are rendered at 300 DPI (200 on Tabloid and A3) and carry that resolution in the file, so word processors that honour it place them at true size as well. The Print button opens the print dialog with the paper already set. Pages puts up to 20 identical sheets into one PDF and one print run; the PNG and JPG are always a single sheet.
If you need the coarser American sizes, the same page switches to 1/2 inch and 1 inch squares; for finer engineering work choose 1/10 inch (ten squares per inch); the metric grids (2 mm, 5 mm, 1 cm) are there too. The details card on the sheet reports how many whole squares the paper holds.

30 across and 40 down with the default 10 mm margin; with the margin off the grid runs edge to edge and 34 by 44 squares fit exactly, because 8.5 and 11 inches are whole multiples of a quarter. A4 holds 29 by 43.
No, though they look alike. A quarter inch is 6.35 mm, so the squares are about a quarter larger than 5 mm ones, and 4 of them make an inch while 2 of the 5 mm ones make a centimetre. Use this page for anything measured in inches and the 5 mm page for metric work.
The printer driver scaled the page to fit its printable area. Set the print dialog to 100% or actual size, keep the 10 mm margin on, and print again - the PDF's page size matches the sheet, so no scaling is needed.
